Why dark BMW paint needs a hand wash
The clear coat on BMW's dark solids and metallics is on the softer side, which is exactly why swirls stand out under low winter sun or LED forecourt lighting. A rollover automatic drags the same cloth across your bonnet that just cleaned a filthy transit van. Every car here is washed by hand using the two-bucket method — one bucket of pH-neutral shampoo, one of clean rinse water with a grit guard — with wheels cleaned first using separate brushes and mitts so nothing off the road ever goes back onto the paint.
The details that make a BMW look properly clean
Three areas separate a decent BMW wash from a great one: the kidney grille, where road film collects between the slats and around the badge; the Shadowline or high-gloss window trim, which marks easily and needs a dedicated plush cloth; and the wheels, where brake dust bakes onto the inner barrel of M-spec spokes. We do all three by hand as standard, not as an upsell.
Interiors: Sensatec, Vernasca and Merino
Most BMWs on Suffolk roads are on Sensatec or Vernasca leather. Both clean well with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush worked into the grain, then wiped back — not soaked. We avoid silicone dressings that leave the seat slippery and shiny; a matte, factory-look finish is the aim. The iDrive screen and gloss console trim get a dry microfibre only.

Yes — face, spoke edges and inner barrel, using soft wheel woolies and a dedicated wheel cleaner rather than a strong acid. Baked-on brake dust from heavy motorway use may need a second pass, which we will tell you about before we start.
Can you wash a BMW with a ceramic coating already on it?+
Yes. We use pH-neutral shampoo only, which will not strip a coating, and skip any wax or sealant so the coating keeps doing its job.
Do you clean the gloss black Shadowline trim?+
Yes, with a separate plush microfibre and light pressure — that trim scratches far more easily than the paint around it.
