For a car that lives outside on a normal street and gets driven daily, a proper wash every 2-4 weeks keeps paint, wheels and trim in good shape. Longer than that and contamination bonds to the clear coat, which shortens the life of any wax and eventually etches the paint.
Winter (November-March): every 1-2 weeks
UK councils spread rock salt from November onwards. Salt spray is corrosive to bare metal, aluminium alloys and any stone chip that has exposed primer. If you can only wash the car once a fortnight in winter, prioritise the underside, wheels and lower panels — that's where salt sits.
Spring pollen (April-June)
Pollen is acidic when it gets damp. Left on paint through a rainy night it can leave staining that shampoo alone won't remove. If your car is yellow-dusty by Friday, it needs a wash before the weekend.
Bird lime and tree sap: within 48 hours
Both are acidic enough to permanently etch clear coat if left in sun. Don't wait for the scheduled wash — spot-clean with warm water and a soft microfibre as soon as you spot them.
Signs the car is overdue
Water sheets off flat instead of beading (wax is gone). Paint feels rough to the fingertips through a plastic bag (bonded contamination — needs a decontamination wash). Wheels have brake-dust staining that shampoo won't lift (needs a proper wheel cleaner and dwell time).
